Carbontex®:
the brake that
don't give up

The original brake pad heats up, slips and becomes uneven. Carbontex® is the global benchmark for carbon brake discs for spinning and casting reels.

WHY REPLACE THE ORIGINAL BRAKE?
  • The original felt heats up and loses its consistency during long matches
  • Carbontex® maintains its performance in both hot and cold conditions
  • A smooth transition from the very first clicks — no more sudden jumps
  • Significantly longer lifespan than the original discs
  • Suitable for spinning and casting — model-specific kits

Carbontex®:
The global benchmark

Developed on the Californian coast by Smoothdrag, Carbontex® is the global benchmark for aftermarket brake discs. Made from high-quality woven carbon fibre, it replaces the original felt discs to deliver a smooth, consistent braking feel that you’ll notice immediately in action.

"A fighting fish, precision tuning. With Carbontex, you no longer have to battle with your brake."
⚡ POWER · SMOOTH OPERATION · LONG LIFE
  • Increased power — Greater braking power than the original brake pads, even during intense battles
  • Progressive braking — Precise adjustments from the very first click. No jerks, no uneven movement
  • Thermal resistance — Carbon does not heat up or warp during intensive use
  • Durability ×3 — Significantly longer service life than the original felt discs

Original brake
vs Carbontex®

You can feel the difference straight away. On the one hand, a brake that overheats, sticks or fails. On the other, a cleaner, more progressive and more consistent response in combat.

Before

Original brake

  • The felt heats up and can become uneven during prolonged matches.
  • Sometimes abrupt start-up or a lack of smoothness during the first few clicks.
  • Faster wear and tear and a decline in performance over time.
  • The brakes feel less responsive as the pressure builds.

It’s acceptable for light use, but quickly becomes a hindrance as soon as the brake needs to remain constant and precise.

After

With Carbontex®

  • +Braking that is more progressive and consistent right from the very first clicks.
  • +Better heat retention and cleaner performance during combat engagements.
  • +Longer service life than the original felt pad.
  • +Greater sense of control and more precise adjustment whilst fishing.

The reel remains the same, but the drag system offers improved performance where it really counts.

Simple. Quick.
No additional parts.

It can be fitted directly onto the spool (Spinning) or into the reel body (Casting) in just a few minutes.

1

Preliminary cleaning

Clean all parts of the braking system with a suitable solvent: white spirit, brake cleaner or evaporating solvent. Avoid kerosene and acetone. Clean surfaces = maximum performance and durability.

2

Replacement of ALL hard drives

Fit all the washers supplied, including those under the main gear. These base washers ensure balance and performance. Sand any reused washers with 600-grit sandpaper.

3

Lubrication (recommended)

Dry assembly = very direct response. For a smoother feel, SmoothDrag recommends a thin layer of Cal's Universal Reel & Drag Grease — just a fingerprint. Grease only.

4

Winding and adjustment

Wind the reel back up, adjust the drag and test the smoothness. No other parts need replacing. For spinning reels: done in a few minutes.

Make it last
your records

Regular maintenance ensures smooth operation and significantly extends the service life of Carbontex® discs.

📅 Frequency

Once or twice a year, or more frequently depending on how often it is used. It’s better to clean it as a precaution than to have it break down during use.

🎣 After every outing

Release the brake to prevent the discs from becoming crushed during storage. A simple step that triples their service life.

🌊 Sea fishing

Tighten whilst rinsing to ensure a watertight seal; loosen once the reel is completely dry.

🧴 Cal's Grease

A thin layer is enough — just a fingertip’s worth. Too much grease will impair performance. The only grease recommended by SmoothDrag.

⚠️ Symptoms

Brakes are uneven or noisy → clean and lightly re-grease. This prevents gradual deterioration.

🧪 Solvents

Use only white spirit or brake cleaner. Never use acetone, kerosene or harsh solvents, as these will damage the fibres.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Carbontex®?
Carbontex® is a registered trademark of SmoothDrag, a pioneer in compressed carbon fibre brake discs for reels. Manufactured in California, they replace the original felt or Dartanium discs. The result: high power, heat resistance, extended service life and a perfectly progressive brake.
Is it easy to install?
Yes. The kits are designed for each specific model. For spinning reels, the spool can be replaced in a matter of minutes without any additional parts. Our step-by-step tutorials cover every model.
Do I need to grease the Carbontex® discs?
Editing dry = a very straightforward answer. For a more gradual effect, SmoothDrag recommends a thin layer of Cal's Universal Reel & Drag Grease — just enough to leave a fingerprint. Too much grease is a problem. This is the only grease recommended.
What cleaning needs to be done before installation?
Cleans all parts with mineral spirits, brake cleaner or evaporating solvent. Avoid kerosene and acetone. Clean, flat, burr-free surfaces = maximum effectiveness and durability.
Do all the discs in the kit need to be replaced?
Yes. Fit all the washers, including those under the main gear. These washers ensure balance and optimum performance. If reusing a washer, sand it down with 600-grit sandpaper.
Why is it important to service the brakes regularly?
1 or 2 times a year minimum. Loosen the brake after each use to prevent the tyre from being crushed. At sea: tighten during rinsing, loosen once dry.
