THE 6 UPGRADES
THOSE WHO CHANGE EVERYTHING

Each category targets a specific part of your reel. Combine them for outstanding results.

BEARINGS:
UPGRADE No. 1

A hybrid ceramic bearing means less inertia, less friction and more speed. It’s the difference you’ll notice straight away on your very first ride.

Distance

Reel (Casting)

The spool of a casting reel spins at high speed during the cast. A hybrid ceramic bearing drastically reduces start-up inertia: a crisper line release, longer casts and perfect control of light lures (BFS).

Preserved thread

Spinning

The roller touches your line with every retrieve. Smooth rolling minimises heat build-up, reduces wear and tear, and makes reeling in more comfortable. A noticeable improvement, evident from your very first time out on the water.

Fluidity

Internal mechanisms

Drive wheel, pinion, worm gear… The internal bearings handle the power transmission. Replacing them with ceramic hybrid bearings reduces friction and ensures smooth, responsive rotation, even under heavy loads.

⚡ Why replace the original brake?

  • The original felt heats up and loses its consistency during long matches
  • Carbontex® maintains its performance in both hot and cold conditions
  • A smooth transition from the very first clicks — no more sudden jumps
  • Significantly longer lifespan than the original discs
  • Suitable for spinning and casting — specific models available

CARBONTEX®:
THE BRAKE THAT
DON'T GIVE UP

Developed on the Californian coast by Smoothdrag, Carbontex® is the global benchmark for aftermarket brake discs. Made from high-quality woven carbon fibre, it replaces the original felt discs to deliver a smooth, consistent braking feel that you’ll notice immediately in action.

"A fighting fish, precision tuning. With Carbontex, you no longer have to battle with your brake."

LUBRICATION:
THE FOUNDATION OF EVERYTHING
THE FORGOTTEN WORLD

Proper lubrication extends the service life of your bearings and gears, ensures consistent performance and keeps everything running smoothly. The right product, in the right place.

Huile

Oils

Protection & Performance

Using a low-viscosity oil on the reel bearings (casting) and the spool (spinning) maximises speed and reduces noise. Using a higher-viscosity oil on the internal bearings improves protection and durability under load.

Graisse

Greases

Protection & Performance

Grease plays a vital role in gears and high-pressure areas. Each type of grease has its own specific characteristics: viscosity, water resistance and material compatibility. Knowing which one to use where makes all the difference.

GEARING & RATIOS:
ADJUST THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUR REEL

The gear ratio (reel revolutions per handle turn) determines your fishing style. An official sprocket and ring gear kit allows you to adjust this ratio without changing your reel. Our kits use only genuine Shimano, Daiwa and Abu Garcia parts.

Guide to gear ratios — by technique and lure

Technique / Lure Recommended ratio Objective
Deep-running crankbait 4.9:1 – 5.4:1 Strength & deep support
Spinnerbait / Chatterbait 6.0:1 – 6.6:1 Versatility, speed control
Texas Rig / Jig / Rubber Jig 7.0:1 – 8.1:1 Responsiveness, loss of tension
Topwater / Jerkbait 7.0:1 – 8.5:1 Fast recovery, precise animation
Frogs / Heavy Cover 8.1:1 and above Overcoming obstacles quickly
Slow jigging / Heavy metal 5.1:1 or less Torque and smooth acceleration
Shore jigging / Long-distance casting 6.0:1 – 6.8:1 The trade-off between distance and control
Squid 5.5:1 – 6.2:1 Smooth animation
Light Game / Finesse 5.8:1 – 6.4:1 Precise management
General all-rounder ≈ 6.3:1 Balance between speed and torque

THE ANSWERS YOU
SHOP AROUND BEFORE YOU BUY

Do ceramic bearings make noise?
At high speeds, a slight whirring noise may occur, depending on the bearing’s seal integrity and the oil used. Proper installation with a suitable lubricant eliminates this issue in the vast majority of cases. High-quality ceramic bearings that are properly lubricated are just as quiet as the original bearings.
What ratio should I start with?
If in doubt, stick to a gear ratio of around 6.3:1, which covers most general-purpose applications. If you mainly use fast-retrieve lures (jerkbaits, topwater lures), go for a ratio of 7.0:1 or higher. For deep-running crankbaits or when you need extra power, opt for a ratio of around 5.4:1.
Is Carbontex compatible with my reel?
Smoothdrag manufactures Carbontex® discs specifically designed for each model. Use our search tool to find the exact kit for your reel, generation and version. Replacing the discs is usually a straightforward DIY job.
Can I combine several upgrades?
Absolutely — in fact, it’s recommended. Hybrid bearings + Carbontex + the right lubrication: this combination completely transforms the feel. Start with the spool bearings (casting) or the roller (spinning), as these provide the most immediate improvement.
Do I need to be a technician to install these upgrades?
Most bearing and Carbontex upgrades can be carried out by a DIY angler with a screwdriver and a bit of patience. Illustrated guides and video tutorials are provided with every product. For gear systems, some experience is recommended.
How do I find the exact dimensions of my bearings?
Our search engine displays the official exploded view of your reel, showing all bearings listed by position. You can immediately see the dimensions (ID × OD × thickness) and compatible products for each location.
